Cutting-edge champion for artistic voices
MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States. Renowned for a commitment to artistic experimentation and creativity, it was founded in 1971 as the Institute for Art and Urban Resources, and later became P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, before settling on its current name. Since 2000, the institution has been affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art, uniting its contemporary mission with MoMA’s strength as one of the greatest collecting museums of modern art in the world. MoMA PS1’s diverse program encompasses more than 50 exhibitions each year, including artists’ retrospectives, site-specific installations and historical surveys, as well as music and performance. Embracing risks and the cutting-edge, MoMA PS1 is extremely popular with the city’s youth, especially its emerging artist population. In line with its progressive roots, the institution is committed to engaging and amplifying the community; plans to open the exterior concrete wall encircling its courtyard, seen as a barrier to the museum, are underway.
