About the Museum

Moderna Museet is one of Europe’s leading museums of modern and contemporary art with the vision to continue to work in the same experimental spirit for which it was founded. The museum wishes to take risks in the name of art, enabling all artistic disciplines to meet while creating dialogue and encouraging interaction with a participating audience. The museum offers rich programs, activities, and events connecting visitors with its dynamic and expanding collection.

With key works by Pablo Picasso, Ljubov Popova, Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim, Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, Irving Penn and other contemporary practicing artists, the Moderna Museet has one of Europe’s finest collections of modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1958, the collection is comprised of 6,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, 25,000 watercolors, drawings and prints, 400 art videos and films and 100,000 photographs (from the birth of photography to today). Swedish and Nordic art naturally have a prominent place in the collection and therefore, is the largest body of works by Öyvind Fahlström, Vera Nilsson, Siri Derkert, Dick Bengtsson and many other Swedish artists. The museum also has a large and renowned international collection, including works by French Impressionists, Russian avant-garde artists and contemporary artists such as Ai Wei Wei, Doris Salcedo, Yinka Shonibare and Mona Hatoum.
