About the Museum

LE BAL is an independent, non-profit Paris center for the arts that focuses on documentary photography, video, cinema, and new media. LE BAL offers exhibitions, talks, publications, grants, and workshops to “confront the public with documentary works that combine, to differing degrees, investigation, experience, recording, analysis, description, and formal invention.”
LE BAL was founded in 2010 by photojournalist Raymond Depardon and Diane Dufour, the former head of Magnum Photos. LE BAL is located in Paris’ 18th arrondissement in the site of a former bar and betting shop and was purchased by the city of Paris as the future venue for the nonprofit in 2006. In addition to 350 square meters of exhibition space, LE BAL features a bookshop and café. LE BAL’s educational center, La Fabrique du Regard, teaches youth from disadvantaged schools in Paris and its suburbs to critically examine images.
