Kunstmuseum Basel, Gegenwart

Basel | Switzerland

European pioneer for contemporary art

The contemporary art wing of the Kunstmuseum Basel opened in 1980 as the first public museum in Europe exclusively dedicated to artworks from the 1960s to the present day. The Gegenwart (which means present) shows works of art — paintings, sculptures, photography and video installations — from the holdings of the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation, and hosts special exhibitions on single artists such as Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Isa Genzken, Richard Serra and Cindy Sherman. Its collection also features works by Bruce Nauman, Robert Gober, Elizabeth Peyton and Matthew Barney. In addition to changing presentations of the collection, there are regular lectures and discussions on contemporary art.
