India’s first private museum is a public treasure

Established by the eponymous art collector, the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (KNMA) opened to the public in January 2010 as India’s first private museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

Founded on the ever-growing personal collection of Mrs. Kiran Nadar, the museum houses over 15,000 artworks spanning the 3rd century BCE to 20th-century Indian art, alongside significant modernist, contemporary, classical, folk and tribal works.

With its multiple offerings, KNMA is dynamic, responsive and continually evolving. Through exhibitions, publications, performing arts initiatives and educational public programs, the museum explores the relationship between art and culture, with a focus on South Asia and its diasporas.

KNMA’s new museum, set to open in the coming years, will be the largest art and cultural center in South Asia. Envisioned as a world-class destination, the space will support artistic practice, encourage dialogue, and create deeper connections between art and the public.

Currently, KNMA operates from its museum in Saket. Its former Noida location is now closed.
