About the Museum
Founded on an initial donation of works from the personal collection of financier and art patron Joseph H. Hirshhorn, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden is part of the Smithsonian Institute and is among the most significant museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States, featuring rich holdings of works by artists including Josef Albers, John Baldessari, Willem de Kooning, Alberto Giacometti, Morris Louis, Louise Nevelson and Hiroshi Sugimoto. Its collection of modern sculpture is particularly impressive, and its temporary exhibitions highlight major contemporary artists from Yayoi Kusama to Jeremy Deller. The museum’s distinctive building, a squat concrete cylinder raised on “legs”, is surrounded by sculpture gardens housing outdoor works by Jeff Koons, Yoko Ono, Henry Moore, Auguste Rodin and others.
