The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA debuted in 1983 as The Temporary Contemporary, an interim exhibition space opened by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles during the construction of its current Grand Avenue home. The noted California architect Frank Gehry renovated a former police car warehouse in LA’s Little Tokyo Historic District for the new space in 1996. After a $5 million gift from the David Geffen Foundation, the institution was renamed The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. The vast industrial interior offers a dynamic 40,000 square feet of exhibition space especially well suited to bold artistic projects, in the past hosting artists such as Adrián Villar Rojas, Olafur Eliasson and Pipilotti Rist. A 2019 gift by MOCA trustee Wonmi Kwon and her husband, Kihong Kwon, supports performance-related experiences as Wonmi’s Warehouse Programs, a cross-disciplinary platform that includes new commissions, experiences, festivals, screenings and artist residencies.
