About the Museum

One of two Smithsonian museums dedicated to Asian art, The Freer Gallery of Art is famous for its large collection of works from China, Japan, Korea, India and Iran, ranging from the Neolithic period to the present day. Its holdings include paintings, ceramics, embroidered textiles, metalware and ceremonial objects. The Freer is also home to the world’s most important collection of work by James McNeill Whistler, including his famous Peacock Room, a masterpiece of Victorian decorative art.
