A home for Latino arts and visual culture on Manhattan’s Museum Mile
El Museo del Barrio is New York’s leading institution for Latino, Caribbean and Latin American arts and visual culture, located on Fifth Avenue’s Museum Mile. El Museo was founded in 1969 by artist and educator Raphael Montañez Ortiz and a coalition of community members advocating for greater representation of Latino artists. The permanent collection comprises 8,500 objects spanning more than 800 years of history, from pre-Columbian to contemporary art. A complete reinstallation in 2023 cuts across traditional categories, reframing the full diversity of Latino art through interdisciplinary themes such as African and Indigenous heritage, craft practices and urban experience. In 2021 El Museo launched “La Trienal”, the first large-scale exhibition surveying Latinx contemporary art in the United States.
