Dia Chelsea is the Manhattan branch of the Dia Art Foundation, which was founded in New York City in 1974 by Philippa de Menil, Heiner Friedrich, and Helen Winkler to help artists achieve visionary works that might not otherwise be realized because of their ambitious size or scope. Dia fulfills its mission by commissioning single artist’s projects, organizing exhibitions and realizing site-specific installations. Today it consists of nine permanent sites across the U.S. and Germany, as well as three changing exhibition spaces in New York state: Dia Chelsea in New York City, Dia Beacon in the Hudson Valley, and Dia Bridgehampton on Long Island. Dia Chelsea's home in the heart of Manhattan’s gallery district reopened in 2021 after a major expansion and refurbishment, and presents temporary exhibitions, performances, lectures, and readings. The Dia foundation also maintains various site-specific works around the city, including Joseph Beuys' “7000 Oaks” and Walter de Maria's “Earth Room.”
