The Silent Shout: Millares on Paper

8 June–15 September 2019

Exhibition Overview

Organised especially for the Centro Botín, El Grito Silencioso: Millares Sobre Papel (The Silent Shout: Millares on Paper) is the first-ever exhibition dedicated to the works on paper of Manolo Millares (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1921-Madrid, 1972).

Best known for his use of sacking, burlap, rope and other materials in his works, throughout his career as an artist Millares also made a considerable number of drawings, many of which will now be shown at the Centro Botín.

Visitors will be taken through a chronological journey starting with works from the artist’s early years as a student, including watercolour landscape paintings and surrealistic Guanche-inspired pieces and focusing on the powerful, original, paintings he made between 1955 and 1972. Some of the works on display will be from Los curas (The Priests), a series of portraits painted in the 1960-1964 period that present a collection of dark figures ranging from the caricature to the sinister, and also from other series like Animales en el desierto (Animals in the Desert) or Mussolini, both dating from 1971.
