About the Museum
Casa Museo José Padilla is the house museum of the life of the composer José Padilla.
José Padilla Sánchez, composer of songs, zarzuelas and operetas, was born in Almeria (Spain) on May 28, 1889 and died in Madrid on October 25, 1960. He studied at the Conservatory of Madrid with José Rivera y Fontanilla, and later in Italy with Pacini. He led Zarzuela companies in Spain and Argentina. He started composing for the popular theater, devoting more to the songs than to the stage works. Among his most popular songs are "La Violetera".
The house was founded by Eugenia Montero and inaugurated by HRH Infanta Cristina, the Mayor of Madrid and representatives of UNESCO in 1992. The building presents a permanent exhibition of posters of the twenties, instruments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Limoges porcelain and Art Nouveau objects. It has an Andalusian garden designed by Padilla himself with roses from Barcelona, Valencian orange trees and jasmine and ceramics from Seville.
