Belvedere 21

Vienna | Austria

The city’s major center for postwar art

Since 2011, Belvedere 21 has been the contemporary outpost of Vienna’s Belvedere museum, a baroque gem in Vienna’s heart. This sister museum could not be more of a contrast; the modernist structure was originally built as the Austrian Pavilion for the 1958 world expo and reconstructed in Vienna. It housed the Museum of the Twentieth Century, later named the Museum Moderner Kunst or 20er Haus, which itself moved to a new site in 2001 (and is now known as mumok). In 2018, the building came under the remit of the Belvedere and is dedicated to exhibitions for modern and contemporary Austrian and international art, with its own collection also on show. The museum hosts a vibrant program of performance, film, concerts and talks and is an important venue for contemporary culture in Vienna.
