Astrup Fearnley Museet

Oslo | Norway

Scandinavia’s contemporary art leader

Since its opening in 1993, the private Astrup Fearnley Museet, focused on contemporary art, has stood as one of Oslo's most important art institutions. In 2012, the museum relocated to Tjuvholmen, where it occupies two Renzo Piano-designed buildings bisected by a canal along the Oslo Fjord. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions of international art and is home to the Astrup Fearnley Collection, one of Norway’s most significant private collections of contemporary art. Founded in the 1960s, the comprehensive collection comprises nearly 1,500 artworks, with a strong emphasis on American post-modern appropriation from the 1980s, but spans styles and movements. It featuring iconic works by artists such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Nicole Eisenman, Damien Hirst, Anselm Kiefer and Jeff Koons, alongside works by Norwegian artists and new commissions.
