Poetic Structure: The Sculpture of Barbara Hepworth
9–26 November 2024 • London

S otheby's are staging a private selling exhibition of works by Barbara Hepworth, on view for two weeks alongside our Modern British & Irish auctions and takeover of Sotheby's London in November. This exhibition will include some of the best examples of her work, from her carvings to her incredible bronze editions, and will touch upon the major points of her career.

The title of our exhibition, Poetic Structure, takes inspiration from Hepworth's own writing - she referred to her work between 1934–39 as being defined by 'constructive forms and poetic structure' - and we are excited to create a unique visual display by pairing each work with Hepworth's own descriptive verse, celebrating her gift for language.

“The word sculpture denotes all those known (and unknown) ways of dealing with the expression of the sculptural idea. I should like to emphasize how fundamentally important the 'idea' of sculpture is to me; every facet of the whole idea, whether it be carving or modelling, hammered metal or wrought iron, space sculpture or mobile is equally valid and equally important as an experience.”
- Barbara Hepworth, reproduced in Sophie Bowness (ed.), Barbara Hepworth: Writings and Conversations, Tate Publishing, London, 2017, p. 57
