Helen Frankenthaler, MantleHelen Frankenthaler’s mesmerizing command of her medium becomes the touchstone which draws any viewer to her 1979 canvas Mantle . Distinguished by the richness of its surface treatment and the variability of its palette, this composition is a celebration of Frankenthaler's distinctive all-over coloration. Frankenthaler’s pioneering soak stain technique, achieved using diluted paint which she poured directly onto an unprimed canvas, radically pushed the boundaries of what painting could be, abandoning the emphasis on painterly gesture championed by the Abstract Expressionists at large. As saturated passages of burgundy intermingle with bright green accents and a spectrum of oceanic blues, Mantle speaks to the liberation of color which placed Frankenthaler at the fore of the Color Field generation. -
Elizabeth Peyton, MarkMark is a paradigmatic example of Elizabeth Peyton's celebrated single figure portraits. Credited with reinvigorating the genre of portraiture at large, Peyton approaches her subjects - both close friends and cultural icons alike - with an intimacy and familiarity that palpably transcends the picture plane. Executed with a nuance of coloration and fullness of composition found in her most celebrated oils, this watercolor is a gem-like testament to Peyton's dexterity across medium. With his striking blue eyes and bright red lips, Mark bears all the hallmarks of her idiosyncratic style of portraiture.
