O n the occasion of celebrating five decades in Asia, Sotheby’s Hong Kong 50th Anniversary Modern Day Auction will present exceptional works of art by figurative and abstract masters of the 20th century whose artistic lens shaped the way we appreciate nature, landscape, and the world around us.
Anchoring the sale is Chu Teh-Chun’s Lointains spirituels, a resplendent encapsulation of the artist’s lyrical abstraction, as well as Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita’s Deux femmes au matelot, a rare piece from 1932 when the artist was travelling in Brazil. Highlights of Southeast Asian figurative art such as Le Pho’s Two Ladies and Mai Trung Thu’s Hairdressing go in hand with still life and landscape paintings including Pang Jiun’s The Arrival of Spring in Lijiang and Arie Smit’s Landscape. Bringing it all together, showcasing the creative spirits and dynamism of modern art, the auction will also gather master works of realism including Chinese painter Chen Yifei’s The confidante and abstract works by Spanish-Filipino painter Fernando Zóbel.
