I ndependent 20th Century, the fair for art made between 1900 and 2000, takes place for the first time this year at The Breuer from September 24th to 27th.
Invited international galleries fill the building with curated exhibitions, which include solo surveys of both familiar and overlooked figures, and thematic presentations of specific moments in art from the last century. Many of these thematic presentations feature overlapping subjects that create art-historical throughlines across the show.
The building’s new state-of-the-art gallery spaces allow the fair, founded in 2022, to double its exhibition scope and further its mission to reframe the canon of 20th-century art by bringing together artists from diverse geographies, generations, movements, and styles.
Independent celebrates the history of the building with its focus on curatorial integrity and innovation and the reassessment of 20th-century art history. Matthew Higgs, Independent’s Founding Curatorial Advisor, notes that “the iconic Breuer building provides the perfect context for Independent 20th Century, a fair that seeks to both explore and amplify the complexity of the art of the 20th Century.”
