S otheby’s is delighted to present a collaboration with the celebrated Florentine art dealer Giovanni Pratesi. The auction will be held in Milan in March 2023.

Giovanni Pratesi established his gallery in 1960 in the magnificent Palazzo Ridolfi situated in the heart of Florence. Pratesi subsequently became president of the Italian Association of Antiques Dealers (since 1995), secretary-general of the Biennale Internazionale dell’Antiquariato di Firenze (since 2001), and director of the Gazzetta Antiquaria (since 1987). From 1999 to 2004 he exhibited at TEFAF in Maastricht.

Giovanni Pratesi

In 1987 Pratesi restored the Serristori Chapel designed by Giovanbattista Foggini in Figline Valdarno. Here he created the Fondazione Giovanni Pratesi, which today houses a collection of Florentine Renaissance and Baroque paintings and sculptures. The collection is distinguished by a marble bust by Giambologna, and an impressive collection of hardstone specimens from the Arno.

As an academic, Pratesi’s contribution to Italian scholarship has included the publications Repertorio della Scultura fiorentina del Seicento e Settecento (Turin, 1993) and Repertorio della Scultura Fiorentina del Cinquecento (Turin, 2003).
