David Hockney
Less Trees Near Warter
Estimate: 40,000 – 60,000 GBP
David Hockney | Less Trees Near Water
Created two years after the famous Bigger Trees Near Warter (2007), the present work offers the viewer a strikingly varied perspective of the Yorkshire landscape by charting the seasonal changes in the woodland of Warter. Rendered on a grand scale, across a tall, narrow composition, the present work is composed of a vast brooding sky and a juxtaposing shock of green and red which delineates a barren earth beneath felled trees. The large landscape takes its title from a scene near the village of Warter, between Bridlington and York in the U.K. and is set during the changing of seasons. The painting is dominated by a large expanse of naked pink country roads criss-crossed with tire tracks and dense stacks of a recently flattened forest. A single blue roofed house is visible along the roadside and indicates signs of human activity and habitation.
George Condo
Reflecting Nude
Estimate: 40,000 – 60,000 GBP
George Condo | Reflecting Nude
Rendered in a light blue pastel pencil sketch, Reflecting Nude, features a female figure who wistfully looks off into the distance. The woman depicted is half dressed in a sheer flouncy cape which shows her breasts and, in typical Condo-esque fashion, wears fishnet stockings. However, the work steps away from Condo’s usual premise: that all things are equal and organised non-hierarchically, as in his cubist pictures. In this work, there is one central shapely nude figure who commands the attention of the viewer, anchored by soft lines which render her form and create a privately intimate scene. Her serene expression and delicate features cast an aura of melancholy and differs from his usual trope of snarling grimaces, furrowed brows and loud, frenzied backgrounds.
Yayoi Kusama
Coffee Cup
Estimate: 15,000 – 20,000 GBP
Yayoi Kusama | Coffee Cup
Coffee Cup forms part of an esoteric series of works on paper created by Yayoi Kusama in the late 1970s. In this series, Kusama’s subjects teeter between abstraction and representation as discernible forms arise from the delicately blurred combination of watercolour and marker pen. Executed on an intimate scale, Kusama’s ethereal forms float against a dotted landscape and carry the surreal quality of the artist’s most celebrated canvases.

This edition of Contemporary Art | London auction includes a wonderful selection of works on paper from some of the most exciting emerging artists as well as the most sought after established names. Throughout art history, works on paper have offered a terrific insight into artists’ working processes. Time and time again we have seen the giants of art history produce wonderfully esoteric and insightful works on paper as a key cornerstone of their practice. From Tracey Emin's ink on paper nude, to George Condo’s arresting portrait and Amy Cutler’s surreal drawing, each work offers a unique and unrivaled sense of intimacy and showcases the experimental practices that lie at the heart of these artists' oeuvres.
