S otheby’s Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art online auction titled “BREATHLESS” presents a curated selection of works by emerging and established artists from the Southeast Asian region. Highlights of the sale include works by Contemporary names like Ronald Ventura, Christine Ay Tjoe, Natee Utarit, Ronson Culibrina, as well as pieces by artists practicing in the Modern era such as Cheong Soo Pieng, Arie Smit, Fernando Amorsolo and Rusli. The auction’s title was derived from a work by Hermon Chong, who was inspired by the bold visual style of the Jean-Luc Godard 1960 film. While the title of the sale may embody different meanings, it aptly captures the sense of anticipation that one may feel when drawn to a particular artwork or subject matter. “Breathless” also embodies the breathtaking beauty of the local landscapes that continues to inspire artists.
