“Reflecting on twenty-five years of gathering photographic images, I now understand that I have collected much as I have lived my life, driven by a curiosity for what I do not know."
C oinciding with the Single Owner Sale ‘As It Unfolds’, we are delighted to present this exceptional group of photographs drawn from the personal collection of Robin Woodhead. Sensitively and thoughtfully amassed over twenty-five years, the collection is a love letter to the medium of photography.
Propelled by a curiosity grounded in memory and wonderment, abstract and dreamlike interiors and landscapes, often with a figurative element, are salient characteristics of the collection. With works spanning from the 1920s to the 2010s, mid-20th century American and Eastern European masters as well as post-war Japanese pillars of photography form key cornerstones of the collection alongside other contemporary international photographers. Each photograph was carefully selected not only for its inherent reflectiveness but also for the superiority of the quality of the print itself, which was integral to the formation of the collection expertly co-curated by Sarah Morthland and Stuart O’Sullivan. Through their guidance, and that of Christian Ravina as well, this uniquely personal collection is a joy to behold, and it is with great excitement to share with you a careful selection of highlights on view in London.
“Our search, our gathering of images, was an organic endeavor. We were not charged with trophy hunting; rather, I can liken our approach to sitting quietly in the landscape, allowing photographs to make their presence known.”
