Scientific Research

Overview

Under the leadership of renowned scientist James Martin, Sotheby’s Scientific Research Department was the first- and still only – department of its kind in the auction world.

In state of the art labs in New York and London, the team use conservation science to investigate a range of items, from paintings and sculptures to furniture and rare bottles of wine. This internal research process provides specialists investigative leads, to help guide and test attributions and provenance.

By integrating science with Sotheby’s rich art-historical and market expertise, we offer an unparalleled level of expertise to our clients.
