Greek Art

Overview

Sotheby’s European Paintings Department offers Greek paintings and sculpture from 1800 to the present day in our Greek sales. Since we began holding these specialised sales in London in 2001, Sotheby’s has offered more than 1,000 lots in this collecting category, achieving a combined total of over £60 million and establishing world-record prices for more than 40 Greek artists including Theodoros Ralli, Constantinos Parthenis, Constantinos Volanakis, Nikolaos Gysis, Nikos Hadjikiriakos-Ghika, Nikiforos Lytras, Yannis Tsarouchis and Yannis Spyropoulos.

Sotheby’s also holds the world-record price at auction for any work of art in this category, which was achieved with the sale of Constantinos Volanakis’s painting The Arrival of Karaiskakis at Faliro for £1,609,250 in November 2008.
