Czech Art

Overview

Sotheby’s is the only international auction house to have held three hugely successful single-owner sales of Czech modern art. Works from the Milan Heidenreich collection were sold in 1997 and 1998, and most recently, the record-breaking sale of the Hascoe Family Collection was held in June 2011. Czech works are also offered regularly within the context of our European Paintings sales and German, Austrian & Central European Paintings sales.

Sotheby’s has achieved world-record auction prices for works by Frantisek Kupka, Josef Capek, Frantisek Foltyn, Bohumil Kubista, Otto Gutfreund, Vaclav Spala, Jan Bauch and Karel Cerny, among others. In June 2011 Sotheby’s sold Kupka’s painting Movement for £1.5 million.
