Inspired by the Nautilus, Patek Philippe's Aquanaut was released in 1997 with a more modern design geared towards younger collectors. The octagonal case was similar to the porthole shape of the Nautilus, but it was slimmer without the latch-like "ears" extending from its sides. An exclusive "tropical" rubber strap also debuted with the watch and was highly resistant to wear, salt water, and ultraviolet rays. This sleek and sporty aesthetic helped make the Aquanaut a huge success.
A more complicated member of the Aquanaut family, the present Travel Time reference 5164R-001 combines the model's youthful looks with practical complications for frequent travelers, such as dual time zones, a day/night indicator and date. The embossed dial has applied gold numerals and two small apertures that indicate whether it is day or night in the local and home time zones. Accompanied by its original box and papers, this hard to come by Aquanaut is a must-have for any Patek Philippe collector.
The watch is in excellent, like-new condition. The movement is running at the time of cataloging, however, it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
