Sheffield Silver Salver

Sheffield silver plate salver bearing the crest and motto of the Lyell family of the Kinnordy Estate, Angus, Scotland.

• The motto, "Forti Non Ignavo," translates to "To the Brave, Not the Dastardly."
• Elaborate cast foliate scroll and shell border applied to piecrust rim, the flat surface with chased band of scrolling foliage surrounding central engraved armorial.
• Raised on four cast scroll feet.
• Charles Lyell was a mentor and friend to Charles Darwin, and was awarded a number of medals for his work in geology, including the Royal Medal given by the Royal Society.
• Silver markings to bottom, including hand-etched numbers and perhaps initials, and stamped K.
