Description

The paper trail of a project from 1957 for an unbuilt aluminum dome theater to be designed by Wright that would not only be used to screen movies but also for live performances and civic events.

  • Frank Lloyd Wright (American).
  • California: N.p. 1957.
  • Project proposal in binder.
  • One on heavy paper signed by all with amendments in Wright's hand, the second a tissue paper copy.
  • A two-page outline of the business structure and use of their proposed "Aluminum Dome Theaters."
  • A Western Union, April 17, 1958, from Herman Odell (who worked for Todd) to Richard Hanley and Todd Company.
  • Letter from Walter F. Nison of Industrial Parks Developers to Todd, Feb. 6, 1958. Margaret M Stewart, Weaver's secretary to Odell, Dec. 15, 1957.
  • Three tissue paper copies of transmittal letters of the agreement, Dec 10, 1957, sent to Wright (at the Plaza in New York City), Weaver and Kaiser. Guilford Glazer of Oak Ridge Properties in Knoxville to Wright (in Madison), Feb. 18, 1958, with enclosure, a copy of an article on the project. Stapled to the letter and article is a Taliesin envelope to Odell postmarked March 3, 1958 from Phoenix. Comprising Pat Weaver's file on the project.

The principals were the producer Mike Todd (who seems to have originated the project). Henry J. Kaiser (who worked with Buckminster Fuller on a geodesic dome theater), Pate Weaver, an NBC producer, and Wright.

Soon after the memorandum of understanding was signed Mike Todd was killed in an airplane accident. The project was not built. The file consists of two copies of the Memorandum of understanding reached on Dec. 6, 1957, by [THE] Frank Lloyd Wright [Foundation], Henry J. Kaiser, Michael Todd, and Pat Weaver.
