In 1967, at the height of the "Flower Power" era, acclaimed American fashion and portrait photographer Richard Avedon met with the Beatles in Thompson House, London. Commissioned by Look Magazine to do a set of individual portraits of the fab four, he overlaid solarized prints with psychedelic Day-Glo colors and symbolic attributes. They were first published in the January 9th, 1968 edition of Look Magazine in the U.S., and&nbsp;you could mail order&nbsp;your own set of “Flame Bright John, Flower Power Paul, Mystic George and Dove Loving Ringo.” They were also offered for sale in Stern Magazine in Germany, The Daily Express in England, and Varagids in Holland.&nbsp;All 4 printings were simultaneous in 1967 and there were 4 different printers, one from each country that printed the posters for their respective publication. The Look Magazine ones, offered here, are the largest, rarest and most collectible of any series.

At the time of the Sunderland gig ‘Please Please Me’ sat at number 3 in the UK charts. The show took place exactly one year prior to the Beatles’ legendary performance on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York City.

The award ceremony was held on Wednesday 26th July 1978, at a luncheon in the Cotswold Suite at London’s Selfridges Hotel.&nbsp;&nbsp;Reflecting the fashion at the time for coloured vinyl, Watts felt it would be an ideal way to present this special release. He recalled:&nbsp;&nbsp;“We came up with the band’s original colors—purple and gold, as on the Queen I cover. These colors signified Queen in a way. We decided on a maroon and gold sleeve and a single pressed on purple vinyl.”&nbsp;&nbsp;However, the project soon became a corporate event, with EMI’s upper management taking control. Although Watts was forced to relinquish production oversight to a separate team, he insisted that the release be executed correctly.&nbsp;&nbsp;His concerns were realised when the records returned from EMI’s Hayes pressing plant – the vinyl was blue, not purple. Due to the extremely limited run of just 200 copies, it was deemed impractical to re-press the single. EMI Hayes production controller, John Tagg, later explained that he had not been informed the vinyl was intended to be purple and, following corporate instructions, pressed the records in blue instead. “The granules were specially formulated for the project,” he recalled.&nbsp;&nbsp;Producing a run of only 200 blue vinyl singles – rather than standard large runs of black vinyl – was a significant challenge. Tagg and his team had to isolate the pressing process entirely from the rest of the plant’s production. Achieving a pure blue vinyl compound was particularly time consuming, and the Queen single took approximately three days to manufacture, at a cost of £4–£5 per copy, compared to the usual 50p per unit.&nbsp;&nbsp;To complete the release, full-color “A Night at the Opera” crest labels were printed and applied to each disc, with both the vinyl and the sleeve then hand-numbered individually, resulting in one of the most sought-after Queen promotional releases ever produced.&nbsp;

A truly fascinating collection of rare material relating to <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=John+Lennon&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">John Lennon</a> and <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Yoko+Ono&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Yoko Ono</a>’s ‘Bed-In for Peace’,&nbsp;which took place at the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel, Amsterdam, Holland, between the 25th&nbsp;and 31st&nbsp;March 1969.&nbsp;<ul><li>Sold as a set of 8 documents and items.</li><li>John Lennon (English).</li><li>Yoko Ono (Japanese).</li><li>Each is presented unframed.</li></ul>&nbsp;On the&nbsp;20th&nbsp;March 1969, John and Yoko were married in Gibraltar before travelling to Paris for a short honeymoon. The couple then journeyed to Amsterdam in John’s white Rolls Royce, where they took up residence on the ninth floor of the Amsterdam Hilton Hotel in Room 902 – the Presidential Suite – to stage the now famous Bed-In for Peace protest. News of the event spread rapidly, and hundreds of journalists soon gathered at the hotel.&nbsp;&nbsp;After reading about the event in her attic bedroom in the small village of&nbsp;Aerdenhout, Holland, a&nbsp;16 year old&nbsp;Dutch Beatles fan named Constance&nbsp;Vrijdaghs&nbsp;decided to travel to the Amsterdam Hilton on the 26th&nbsp;March&nbsp;1969. Upon arriving, she began chatting with two girls and a boy who were standing outside, gazing up at the windows displaying the “Hair Peace” and “Bed Peace” signs. Constance asked whether they had been upstairs, and when they replied that they had not, she resolved to try and meet her idol herself.&nbsp;&nbsp;Once inside the hotel, Constance told the&nbsp;doorman&nbsp;she was heading to the bar for a coffee. As soon as she passed him, she ran to the lift, jumped inside, and pressed the button for the ninth floor. Unfortunately, the doors did not close quickly enough, and she was stopped by a porter. Thinking quickly, Constance produced her Dutch Beatles Fan Club membership card and explained,&nbsp;“I am from the Dutch Beatles Fan&nbsp;Club&nbsp;and I would like to congratulate John and Yoko on their marriage. I am also here to interview them.”.&nbsp;&nbsp;The porter was skeptical and escorted her out of the lift, asking her to wait in the lobby while he made a call. Around twenty minutes later, two representatives from&nbsp;Bovema, The Beatles’ record company in Holland, arrived and escorted her to Room 902 on the ninth floor.&nbsp;&nbsp;When the door opened, John and Yoko were sitting on the bed in their pajamas. Constance congratulated them on their recent marriage, and John invited her to sit on the edge of the bed. She chatted with the couple for some time and asked them to sign her copy of the March 1969 issue of The Beatles Monthly Book, which they happily did.&nbsp;&nbsp;After a while, Constance was asked to leave by the record company executives. However, before&nbsp;departing, she asked John whether, if she wrote down some questions in the hotel lobby for an article she was preparing for the Dutch Beatles Fan Club, he and Yoko would answer them and send them back to her. The couple agreed.&nbsp;&nbsp;On the&nbsp;28th&nbsp;March 1969 the completed and signed questionnaires in John and Yoko’s hand with a covering letter on Amsterdam Hilton letterhead paper were mailed back to Constance in her&nbsp;home town&nbsp;of&nbsp;Aerdenhout.&nbsp;&nbsp;The archive consists of the following&nbsp;material:&nbsp;<ul><li>A one-page covering letter on Amsterdam Hilton letterhead, handwritten by John Lennon in black felt-tip pen and signed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The letter reads:&nbsp;</li></ul> 	“Dear Constance,&nbsp;&nbsp;It was too complicated to do it the way you wanted — so I wrote in BLACK and Yoko in BLUE. On most things we thought the same, so only JOHN filled in.&nbsp;&nbsp;John&nbsp;Yoko”&nbsp; The covering letter measures 18.7cm x 26.5cm (7.3 inches by 10.4 inches).&nbsp; <ul><li>Questionnaire 1 – A sheet of white lined notepad paper on which Constance&nbsp;Vrijdaghs&nbsp;has handwritten 11 questions over both sides of the sheet to put to John and Yoko. The couple have handwritten their respective responses in black and blue pens. At the end of the questionnaire John Lennon has signed in black felt tipped pen and Yoko Ono has signed in blue ballpoint pen. John has also drawn facial doodles of himself and Yoko. Four pieces of notebook paper on which <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Eric+Clapton&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Eric Clapton</a> has hand drawn the conceptual artwork for his 1998 album Pilgrim. <ul><li>Sold as a set of 5: </li><li>Eric Clapton (English, born 1945).</li><li>The lot consists of one black and white sketch with additional notations, and three color sketches.</li><li>A copy of the album with the final artwork is included.</li></ul> After Clapton came up with the initial ideas, he commissioned Japanese artist Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, best known for his work on Nadia – The Secret Of Blue Water and Neon Genesis Evangelion, to create the album sleeve. Eric had become aware of Sadamoto not through his work on manga and anime but his 1993 art book Alpha. A copy of the CD that pictures Sadamoto’s final artwork on the front cover is included with the lot. The album was released on the 10th March 1998 on Reprise Records; it was Clapton’s first release since his 1989 album Journeyman. Pilgrim was one of Eric’s most successful commercially released albums, reaching the top in in twenty two countries. Once the album was completed, Eric’s original hand drawn conceptual artwork was passed to the graphic designer, Bogdan Zarkowski, who designed the concert program for Eric Clapton’s 1999 Pilgrim world tour and images taken from the artwork were reproduced in the program. A copy of the program is also included with this lot as well as a selection of paperwork relating to the production of the program.

Diana Moseley, in an interview with Sotheby’s, June 2023, recalled making the hats for this occasion:&nbsp;&nbsp;"Freddie&nbsp;had a huge sense of humor. I remember making all the hats for his 40th birthday party in 1986, each one specifically designed for a member of the family or one of his friends, like Mary, Jim, Joe,&nbsp;Peter&nbsp;and some actor friends. There were joke ones and a trick one for Freddie which nearly broke his jaw because it had an exploding device in it. He found it hilarious. When I arrived at the house with them, it was like giving out Christmas presents. The day before, they had all been bouncing around the house setting up the party, putting hatstands in the garden, as if for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. It was a curious sight, but so much fun.”&nbsp;The ‘exploding device’ referred to by Moseley is the mechanism inside the ‘<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2023/freddie-mercury-a-world-of-his-own-crazy-little-things-2/freddie-mercurys-mad-hatter-top-hat-and-other-hats" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mad Hatter’ top hat</a> which made the top flip open to reveal the ‘surprise bang’.

John writes to relieve Mr Anthony of his duties as his chauffer, he had been working for John Lennon since 1965. Les drove The Beatles to collect their MBEs from Buckingham Palace and he drove John’s Rolls Royce to Almeira in Spain when he was filming How I Won The War. In the letter John also refers to his employees May Pang and to Dan Ritcher who was his personal assistant. The letter reads: ‘NOV! ?Dear Les and family,As you know we seem to be living half our lives abroad these days, and it’s crazy to keep a large staff, as we need people here – right?You’ve been a good lad over the years and faithful – for which I thank you. Then went to the “Bag-O-Nails”, a club where the Stones and Beatles go’&nbsp;</li><li>Monday 7th August 1967 – ‘Next went to the Speakeasy. Need a passport to get in as a guest.’&nbsp;</li><li>Tuesday 8th August 1967 – ‘BEFORE I write – anything I must say that I met (talked to) John Lennon of The Beatles! It happened in the morning (actually – to be technical – on August 9th at 3.15 at the Speakeasy Club. I got his autograph and talked to him. He signed his name with this very pen I’m writing this with. He was very sharp and witty. For example, I said “Hey John, I know you don’t like to sign be bothered signing autographs…” And before I had a chance to finish he said, “How do you know?” I said “Well, ah – ah – I guess I don’t really know but I just assumed that”. Then I told him I didn’t normally collect autographs, but there were only four people whose autographs I would ever want and that is: The Beatles. Then he said something in return but I didn’t quite understand him. He said something about “You mean you wouldn’t want Kruschev’s (sic) or Johnson’s autograph?” Thinking he said that, I said, “No No, I just want The Beatles autographs”. Then I asked him if The Beatles were going to change their name to Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band. He once again gave me a witty answer and said “What do you mean? What’s wrong with having two names? Will you accept us if we use the name “Beatles” on one side of a record and “Sergeant Pepper” on the other side?” Again I had to admit he was right. What’s wrong with two names? Why should you conform and have only one name? Then, finally, I asked “Oh? Do you mean that your next album will use both names?” He said “Maybe, that’s and idea” He walked out of the John (bathroom) and as he left I said “Thanks John” He said “It’s all right” I still don’t believe it happened. Before this I went to the “Wetherbee Inn” and “The Ship” nothing half as interesting happened.&nbsp;</li><li>Sammy Davis Jr. was also at The Speakeasy. I also met a guy named Mark who I talked to most of the night. There weren’t many girls at all.&nbsp;</li><li>John Lennon was at a table with Eric Burdon and the Animals who are playing at the Speakeasy on Thursday nite. I hope to see them.’&nbsp;</li><li>Thursday 10th August 1967 – Went to Speakeasy. Saw Eric Burdon and the Animals. Psychedelic Sound. Got Eric’s autograph. They were just a lot of noise.
