Diana Moseley | Freddie Mercury

A black lace hat with silver polka dots that was previously owned by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Freddie+Mercury&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Freddie Mercury</a>.&nbsp;<ul><li>designed by Diana Moseley.</li><li>Commissioned for Freddie Mercury's Very Silly Hat Party, 1986.</li></ul> The hat was designed by Diana Moseley for Freddie’s ‘Very Silly Hat’ party that took place at his Garden Lodge home on his 40th&nbsp;birthday. Diana Moseley, in an interview with Sotheby’s, June 2023, recalled making the hats for this occasion:&nbsp;&nbsp;"Freddie&nbsp;had a huge sense of humor. I remember making all the hats for his 40th birthday party in 1986, each one specifically designed for a member of the family or one of his friends, like Mary, Jim, Joe,&nbsp;Peter&nbsp;and some actor friends. There were joke ones and a trick one for Freddie which nearly broke his jaw because it had an exploding device in it. He found it hilarious. When I arrived at the house with them, it was like giving out Christmas presents. The day before, they had all been bouncing around the house setting up the party, putting hatstands in the garden, as if for the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. It was a curious sight, but so much fun.”&nbsp;The ‘exploding device’ referred to by Moseley is the mechanism inside the ‘<a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2023/freddie-mercury-a-world-of-his-own-crazy-little-things-2/freddie-mercurys-mad-hatter-top-hat-and-other-hats" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mad Hatter’ top hat</a> which made the top flip open to reveal the ‘surprise bang’.

The concert was part of The Beatles UK tour with Roy Orbison. It was reviewed in the Daily Express by the northern show business correspondent, Derek Taylor, who would subsequently become Brian Epstein’s personal assistant and later the Apple press officer.

At the time the letter was sent, John and Yoko were living at 105 Bank Street, Greenwich Village, New York, USA. John writes to relieve Mr Anthony of his duties as his chauffer, he had been working for John Lennon since 1965. Les drove The Beatles to collect their MBEs from Buckingham Palace and he drove John’s Rolls Royce to Almeira in Spain when he was filming How I Won The War. In the letter John also refers to his employees May Pang and to Dan Ritcher who was his personal assistant. The letter reads: ‘NOV! ?Dear Les and family,As you know we seem to be living half our lives abroad these days, and it’s crazy to keep a large staff, as we need people here – right?You’ve been a good lad over the years and faithful – for which I thank you. I know you’ve spoken to Peter Howard and Dan about leaving and I hope the arrangements suit you,see you some dayall the best fromJohn x YokoP.S. if there’s anything you want to say to us, call May at ABCKO, if you need a reference – tell us what you need: o.k.?P.P.S. say goodbye to your wife and the kids xxx’

Handwritten Letter from John Lennon and Yoko Ono to their Chauffer

A brick from the original <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Cavern+Club&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cavern Club</a> on Mathew Street, Liverpool, widely known as the 'birth place of <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=the+Beatles&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">the Beatles</a>.'<ul><li>With a mounted silver plaque from Royal Life stating “This is to certify that this is one of 5000 bricks which Royal Life have salvaged from the original Cavern Club, Mathew Street, Liverpool, England. Royal Life have sold these bricks, donating the proceeds to a local charity”.</li><li>The plaque has the Cavern Walks logo and printed signatures from H B Johnson - the general manager of Royal Life and Ray McFall - the founding owner of the original Cavern Club.</li></ul>

A <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/collectibles/vintage-poster/music" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">concert poster</a> for a performance by the <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Beatles&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Beatles</a> in Belfast, in 1964.<ul><li>Produced for a performance that took place at King’s Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland on the 2nd of November, 1964.</li><li>This was the only venue that produced a poster promoting a concert on The Beatles/Mary Wells 1964 UK tour, no other posters are known to have been made for any other performances or venues on this tour.</li><li>The concert was originally scheduled for just one performance at 8:45pm and was then subsequently changed to two performances, one at 6:00pm and one at 8:45pm.</li><li>A piece of paper has been glued over the original time stating these changes.</li><li>Another piece of paper which reads ‘G.W. Connell &amp; Trevor Kane’ has been adhered to the poster replacing Trevor Kane’s name.</li><li>The poster is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Mark Kane, the son of the event promoter, Trevor Kane.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul>

An uncut printers proof for a proposed Queen Radio Ga Ga 1980s Christmas card, <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/luxury/collectibles?query=signed&amp;locale=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">signed</a> on the front by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Freddie+Mercury&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Freddie Mercury</a> in blue pen, and a 1980s Freddie Mercury Christmas Card.<ul><li>Sold as a set of 2.</li><li>Each is presented unframed.</li></ul> The artwork on the front of the card features an image of Queen taken during the video shoot for Radio Ga Ga; this was also the image that was originally going to be used on the 7 inch single sleeve but it was withdrawn.&nbsp; It is said that a number of these proofs were signed by Freddie Mercury in Germany in the mid-1980s prior to Christmas and they were then sent back to London where they were intended to be made into Christmas cards. However, this project never materialized and the proofs remained in Freddie’s home, Garden Lodge, for over 35 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Also included is a 1980s day glow pink Christmas card that features a black and white image of Freddie Mercury on the front taken during a photo shoot for Vogue magazine. The text printed inside the card humorously reads ‘Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Preening, Pouting, Posturing, Posing Old Tart’. The card was specially commissioned by Freddie Mercury to send to friends.

Then went to the “Bag-O-Nails”, a club where the Stones and Beatles go’&nbsp;</li><li>Monday 7th August 1967 – ‘Next went to the Speakeasy. Need a passport to get in as a guest.’&nbsp;</li><li>Tuesday 8th August 1967 – ‘BEFORE I write – anything I must say that I met (talked to) John Lennon of The Beatles! It happened in the morning (actually – to be technical – on August 9th at 3.15 at the Speakeasy Club. I got his autograph and talked to him. He signed his name with this very pen I’m writing this with. He was very sharp and witty. For example, I said “Hey John, I know you don’t like to sign be bothered signing autographs…” And before I had a chance to finish he said, “How do you know?” I said “Well, ah – ah – I guess I don’t really know but I just assumed that”. Then I told him I didn’t normally collect autographs, but there were only four people whose autographs I would ever want and that is: The Beatles. Then he said something in return but I didn’t quite understand him. He said something about “You mean you wouldn’t want Kruschev’s (sic) or Johnson’s autograph?” Thinking he said that, I said, “No No, I just want The Beatles autographs”. Then I asked him if The Beatles were going to change their name to Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band. He once again gave me a witty answer and said “What do you mean? What’s wrong with having two names? Will you accept us if we use the name “Beatles” on one side of a record and “Sergeant Pepper” on the other side?” Again I had to admit he was right. What’s wrong with two names? Why should you conform and have only one name? Then, finally, I asked “Oh? Do you mean that your next album will use both names?” He said “Maybe, that’s and idea” He walked out of the John (bathroom) and as he left I said “Thanks John” He said “It’s all right” I still don’t believe it happened. Before this I went to the “Wetherbee Inn” and “The Ship” nothing half as interesting happened.&nbsp;</li><li>Sammy Davis Jr. was also at The Speakeasy. I also met a guy named Mark who I talked to most of the night. There weren’t many girls at all.&nbsp;</li><li>John Lennon was at a table with Eric Burdon and the Animals who are playing at the Speakeasy on Thursday nite. Also met a girl who said she wrote for an American newspaper about pop music. Associated with WPOP in Hartford. Name Debbie Smith She seemed to like me. The New Animals did not impress me. They were just a lot of noise. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play A Spaniard In the Works with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film How I Won the War. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenance from Paul Wane, one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists.

I worked for Ron Belchier who was the producer of Easy Beat and I married the producer of Saturday Club, Bill Bebb. I obtained the autographs of The Beatles at a recording session held at the BBC in London in the 1960s. The Beatles gave myself and several other secretaries their autographs and then stopped and chatted to us for a while. A wonderful day.’
