CATALOGUE NOTE
Patek Philippe Advanced Research department has several times gained attention with innovative components that contribute to the higher rate accuracy and reliability of timepieces. The reference 5550P perpetual calendar, available in a limited edition of 300 pieces, illustrates perfectly how the ‘Patek Philippe Advanced Research’ concept blends tradition and innovation seamlessly. This watch offers unique functional benefits, including an extended power reserve, high rate accuracy and dependable performance. It features an exquisite Calatrava-style case made from platinum using traditional cold-forming methods, curved lugs, and a rounded bezel. The moon-phase display's correction push piece is located between the lugs at 6 o'clock, making the typical diamond that signifies Patek Philippe's exclusive platinum watches appear at 12 o'clock. The watch's dial has a timeless, contemporary design with many refined details and a cool silvery gray face with a vertical satin finish. This piece is elegant and eminently readable.
To appropriately present the Oscillomax® ensemble, Patek Philippe has utilized to the legendary self-winding calibre 240 with a perpetual calendar. It includes the following Silinvar® components: the patented Patek Philippe Spiromax® balance spring, the patented Pulsomax® escapement, and the patented GyromaxSi® balance. The name of the calibre 240 Q Si movement is self-explanatory: Q stands for ‘quantième perpétuel’ (French for perpetual calendar) and Si stands for silicon technology. This technology is in charge for a quantum leap in the classic movement. It accounts for a significant increase of energy efficiency attributable to the innovative Oscillomax® subsystem. This improvement is based on the noticeably lower mass of Silinvar® parts compared to conventional components, on the optimized geometry of the lever and escape wheel, and on the much-improved aerodynamics and mass distribution of the GyromaxSi® balance. Less energy dissipated means greater efficiency as demonstrated by a power reserve increase of about 50% without having necessitated any modifications of the mainspring, the frequency, or the moment of inertia of the balance. This limited edition ‘Patek Philippe Advanced Research’ perpetual calendar has a power reserve of up to 70 hours.
