The “dotted horses” panel in the Pech Merle cave is an archetypal compendium of Paleolithic cave art in all its aspects: the subjects depicted, the techniques used, the composition and framing of the figures, the use of the cave wall as a surface… These two large black horses in opposition, speckled in red and black and partially surrounded by discs and negative handprints, encapsulate all the complexity and mystery of humanity’s earliest art.
