Catalogue Note

A kaleidoscope of brilliant colors and delineated figures with dark, daring brushstrokes,The Madness of My Mind is a paradigm of George Condo’s exploration in his more recent paintings. Within the fractured realm of the present work, abstraction and figuration collide with thrilling velocity before the viewer’s eyes. While one central figure is alluded to, it evades clear articulation, as Condo deftly manipulates our ability to read the image before us. Executed in monumental scale, viewers are entranced by the emotive and whimsical scene, their gaze moving across the canvas from eye to eye never settling. Beneath the thick, black fluid lines, passages of blues, greens, reds and purples emerge, further distorting the distinct understanding of a centralized character. Any traces of physical individuality are abandoned in favor of mapping out the extremes of human emotions.

Condo’s practice is deeply concerned with examining the principals of art history. In The Madness of My Mind, the multitudinous ‘subject’ is divided into many planes marking an homage to Cubism. Condo has established himself in the canon of Western art history as a master philosopher of the human psyche, presenting to his audience forms that delight and repulse, amuse and sadden, welcome and alienate. Pulsating through his figures are a range of human emotions, as said by the artist, “People are torn apart in and of themselves, barely human at times. You can see a person trying to break free from a structure and become whole again” (the artist quoted in: Nadja Sayej, “George Condo: 'Change can’t just be an idea or a slogan – it has to get real'”, The Guardian, November 6, 2020 (online)). The Madness of My Mind epitomizes Condo’s mature style and is a remarkable example within the artist’s celebrated pictorial language in forms and figuration.
