Catalogue Note

Bronze Cache signifies a continuation of form for Brian Thoreen while shifting the immediacy of function. By rendering a cache at the top of the piece inconspicuously, the sculpture retains an air of playfulness and mystery. Its textured, polished bronze surface lends intimate detail to its otherwise sleek, elegant form. The paradoxical nature of the work is further embodied by the tension between its imposing height and its capacity to gently tip like a pendulum - the work may sway, but always regains its composure. Bronze Cache is exemplary of the artist's tendency to tread the thin line between whimsy and refinement, and utility and sculpture.

Brian Thoreen (b. 1979) is an American designer and artist who lives and works between Los Angeles and Mexico City. He creates functional and nonfunctional works which gather their ethos from the nature of the materials the artist uses. Focusing on materiality and form, Thoreen's body of work consists of studies on material independence and interdependence. The materials used by the artist pursue an opportunity to be expressed and are often raw and untreated, pushing the boundaries of whatever limits are intrinsic to the materials themselves and the artist's hand. This unfiltered methodology is visible throughout Thoreen's works, whether formed of hand-blown glass, industrial rubber sheets, or hand-hammered copper.
