The tale of the Joad family as they travel across the country from Oklahoma to California in the midst of the Great Depression is one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. It is Steinbeck's masterpiece. The Grapes of Wrath won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer and was central in the awarding of Steinbeck the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.
