The cave art at Cougnac makes a powerful and unique impression on visitors. Here we find the perfect integration of magnificent cave art within an underground landscape adorned by prodigious mineral formations. It consists of dozens of depictions of mammoths, large deer, human figures, various “symbols,” and, above all, goats like those featured in this photograph. Once again, Paleolithic art offers us an example of the combination of expressive and compositional resources. The three main images, in a very intense red, are oriented to the left and display varying levels of anatomical detail, though in all cases it is sufficient to identify the species, sex, and age of the animals. The two on the right occupy a “clean” wall surface framed by stalactites and other calcite formations. The one on the left is situated behind a mineral outcrop that partially hides it from view.
