Goethite on Pyrite

This striking specimen from Colombia is known as an “iron cross twin” and has formed from two pyrite crystals that grew together at intersecting right angles, producing the distinctive crosses seen on the sides of the piece. Although the underlying mineral is pyrite, a layer of goethite – a type of iron oxide – has developed on the surface, giving the specimen a dramatic and weathered look, complete with red highlights and golden pyrite accents peeking out from underneath.
