Almandine Garnets in Schist
Passo del Rombo, South Tyrol, Italy
These almandine garnets were discovered in the famous mountain pass of Passo del Rombo in the South Tyrol province of northern Italy. Given their deep red color by the presence of iron, the four garnets featured in this specimen stand out against the neutral-colored schist rock in which they grew.
