On August 12, 1981, Cal Ripken Jr. made his first start in the big leagues with the Baltimore Orioles. In the second game of a double-header, the Orioles defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-3. Ripken failed to reach base in his first two Major League at-bats after getting his first big league action two days prior as a pinch runner.

Though Ripken only appeared in 23 games during the 1981 season, he began his MLB-record consecutive games streak the following year. He famously appeared in 2,632 games between May 30, 1982 and September 19, 1998. It is widely considered one of the most unbreakable records in all of professional sports.

Ripken’s career accolades include two MVPs, 19 All-Star Game selections and the 1983 World Series title.
