Description

A card containing the signatures of Arthur Conan Doyle along with 17 others.

  • Signed at top of card by Arthur Conan Doyle.
  • Other signatures include: writer Eugene Field, Doyle's brother John Francis Innes Hay Doyle, writer Alice French alias Octave Thanet, Melville E. Stone, the founder of the Chicago Daily News and his son Herbert Stuart Stone of Stone and Kimball, publishers, actor Joseph Jefferson and preacher Frank W. Gunsaulus.
  • On verso is written a poem by attendee Alice A. Russell incorporating the names of the guests, beginning "Why this joyous turmoil? / 'Tis to greet Dr. Doyle! / Oh, who would not hustle / To see Mr. Russell . . . ."
  • Signed for the occasion of Doyle's first series of lectures in America, organized by Major Pond, which commenced in early October 1894.
