Returning characters Scarecrow and Tin Man are joined by new favorites like Jack Pumpkinhead and the Woggle Bug in a fantasy adventure with political machinations in the kingdom of Oz. Aspects of this Oz book were adapted (along with Ozma of Oz) into the 1985 cult film Return to Oz.

According to Baum bibliographer Bienvenue, there were five major printings of this title; the first printing, as here, is quite scarce on the marketplace today — and in fact, scarcer than the first/first of the book's legendary predecessor, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
