Description

A first edition, presentation copy of Modern Love and Poems of the English Roadside by George Meredith.

  • George Meredith (British).
  • London: Chapman & Hall, 1862.
  • Inscribed by the author at top of title-page: "Jessie Prothero from GM."
  • Bound in the original green wavy-grain cloth, Carter's Binding A, with four single-word corrections in Meredith's hand on pages 13, 51, 173, &195, laid in is a 1 page autograph letter signed from Meredith to another person ("Dear Madam"), Box Hill, Dorking, dated 18 November 1894.
  • Housed in a quarter red morocco slipcase, raised bands, gilt lettered spine.


Meredith lived near the Prothero family for a time. Jessie Prothero is surely in some way related to the Prothero family. Thomas Prothero, a wealthy lawyer was a close friend and benefactor of Meredith in his youth. Their relationship was significant to Meredith's early life and career. He provided financial assistance and general support to the young and struggling writer.
