Description

Pen and ink art sketches from Perfume From Provence by Lady Fortescue, signed by the illustrator Ernest H. Shepard, accompanied by a copy of the book.

  • Sold as a set of 3 drawings and 1 book, housed in a custom box.
  • Book by Winifred Fortescue (English).
  • Illustrations by Ernest H. Shepard (English).
  • n.p. n.p, [no later than 1935].
  • Drawings on artist's board, each captioned below the image in pencil in Shepard's hand.
  • Signed by Shepard in the images and on the versos of each board.
  • Housed in a custom quarter leather box.

Today this title has something of a cult following as Lady Fortescue's books have deservedly seen renewed interest. Shepard's art is perfectly suited to the text, with his characteristic attention to detail:

  • The first drawing appears on page 66 and is captioned in pencil by Shepard: "It was hard to lose a daughter of hardly seventeen."
  • The next image appears on page 86 and is captioned in pencil by Shepard: "Champagne corks popped."
  • The last image appears on page 104 and is captioned in Shepard's hand: "Grasping the receiver in floury hands."

Each drawings is larger than the printed versions. A unique and whimsical collection, accompanied by a copy of the book.
