Description

Finely bound second illustrated edition of Hugo's famed tale of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

  • Includes 11 plates and 1 engraved title page after Louis Boulanger, Alfred and Tony Johannot, Raffet, Rogier and Rouargue.
  • Bound in full green unsigned leather with gilt rule to edges and covers elaborately embossed in blind, spines with gilt and black label with gilt lettering, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers.


The Second Illustrated Edition was published the same year as the first illustrated edition in one volume. The first edition of the Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) appeared in 1831 and is one of the great works of French literature. An early example of the Imperial Arming Press, also called an embossing or stamping press, first used in 1832.
