First American edition, first issue of The Time Machine An Invention by H.G. Wells
- H.G. Wells (English).
- New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1895.
- Tipped in frontis, with the author's name incorrectly spelled on the title-page as "H. S. WELLS."
- Original publisher's tan cloth, top edge gilt, others uncut, housed in a purple cloth clamshell slipcase, gilt lettered purple leather spine label.
The American first edition was published before the British edition and the text, presumably an earlier version of the story, differs significantly from the British edition.
