Description

Finely bound first illustrated edition of Hugo's famed tale of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

  • Bound in half red unsigned leather and marbled paper board, spine with gilt and black label with gilt lettering.


The first edition of the Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) appeared in 1831 and is one of the great works of French literature.

First illustrated edition. Without the plate "De l'utilite des vins" (On the usefulness of windows), as usual, as it was not finished when printing began. The second illustrated edition, published in three volumes later in 1836, contained it.
