Description

First edition of Vollard's satirical text with numerous illustrations, one of only 355 total copies.

  • Engravings by Georges Rouault (French).
  • Ambroise Vollard (French).
  • Paris: Ambroise Vollard 28, rue de Martigny, 1932.
  • Folio.
  • Number 231 of 250 (of 355 total) copies on verge d'auvergne de la Manufacture Royale de Vidalon.
  • 22 etchings and 104 wood engravings by Rouault.
  • In blue cloth drop box, hinge off, with pictorial wrappers.

Vollard's continuation of Jarry's satirical Père Ubu character, illustrated with etchings and woodcuts by Rouault, made with his unorthodox technique. "It has been shown that his original gouache sketches were transferred by photography to the copper-plate, which the artist then worked over with etching, aquatint and drypoint to attain the dark and heavy texture" —The Artist and the Book.
