Description

Signed military appointment for John Hancock with signed statement from Colonel John Boyd.

  • John Hancock (American).
  • One page with integral blank.
  • "Commonwealth of Massachusetts," November 4, 1787, appointing "Benjamin Pond . . . Quarter Master of the fifth Regiment, in the first Division of the militia in this Commonwealth comprehending the County of Suffolk."
  • Paper.

John Boyd, who signed the rear, is possibly John Parker Boyd, who fought to counter Shays' Rebellion, before leaving the Army to fight for the British in India. He came back to the US in 1808 and served as an officer until the end of the War of 1812.
