Description

A first edition, second issue of Poems by the Brontë sisters.

  • Charlotte Brontë [under the pseudonym Currer Bell] (English).
  • Emily Brontë [under the pseudonym Ellis Bell] (English).
  • Anne Brontë [under the pseudonym Acton Bell] (English).
  • London: Smith, Elder, and Company, 1848.

Originally published in 1846 by Aylott and Jones in an edition of 1000 copies. Following a sale of two copies, around 37 were given away by the Brontes as review copies or gifts. The remaining copies were put into storage. Two years later, following the success of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, Smith Elder and Co. purchased the books in stock and reissued with a title page bearing the Smith, Elder imprint but retaining the 1846 date.
