Description
Japanese woodblock triptych from the Meiji period.
- A vibrant scene depicting a banquet for the opening of the Gakushuin, which was designated as the school for the aristocrats in Tokyo by Toyohara Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838-1912).
- Attended by the Emperor and Empress Meiji, the school was opened in 1877.
- Nishiki-e, ink and color on vertical ôban.
- Publisher Matsushita Heibei, signed Chikanobu hitsu.
- Museum placard on verso.
- Black metal frame glazed with acrylic.
