Description

Japanese woodblock triptych from the Meiji period.

  • A vibrant scene depicting a banquet for the opening of the Gakushuin, which was designated as the school for the aristocrats in Tokyo by Toyohara Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838-1912).
  • Attended by the Emperor and Empress Meiji, the school was opened in 1877.
  • Nishiki-e, ink and color on vertical ôban.
  • Publisher Matsushita Heibei, signed Chikanobu hitsu.
  • Museum placard on verso.
  • Black metal frame glazed with acrylic.
