Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847, despite the uncertainty and disruption during the century's ongoing political upheavals. Cartier kept going strong and continued to see success and growth over the ensuing decade, opening its first boutique in 1859.
Cartier wanted to establish the company internationally, not only to make the Cartier name famous among the crowned heads of Europe, and was named "King of Jewellers, Jeweller of Kings." In 1904, Cartier launched their first Santos wristwatch, and followed it with other iconic wristwatches over the years.
The watch is in overall fair condition with moderate wear throughout commensurate with age. Case is in overall fair condition with moderate surface wear and signs of tarnish. Strap has moderate signs of surface wear throughout commensurate with age. Dial is in overall good condition. Caseback shows minor signs of pitting. The movement is running at the time of cataloging, however, it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement.
